30 Day Song Challenge

Day 15 - A song that describes you

This whole challenge really is challenging me, as you would have gathered from my previous posts. I find it hard to describe myself as I see myself - because I’m sure someone would point out “hey you’re not like that and I have proof” and I’d be inclined to agree. I think of myself as deeply troubled and aloof, even though I have no reason to be. I’ve been described as rather blunt, overly-serious and selfish - and while I certainly can be, I am not like this all the time and I really try hard not to be. Others see me as annoyingly happy, eccentric and loud, which I find just a little weird.
It was hard to choose between “Losing My Mind” by Eskimo Joe and “Buttons” by Sia. In the end, I chose “Buttons” because Tumblr won’t let me upload any audio I have found I do let people get close to me but end up pushing them away because of my own neuroses. I do see ghosts in people and it scares me. I get obsessive thoughts which make me paranoid that I’m going to get hurt. I crave intimacy and friendship but I keep it all at an arm’s length until I know for sure that this person is good for me. If I start acting up because of these problems, I am sure that person will walk away from me because I am no good for them.
Both these songs explore this theme, so it was tough to decide which do describe myself in a way we’d both agree on. :P

Day 14 - A song that no one would expect you to love

This is a toughie. What would you expect me not to love? I don’t mind a bit of everything - techno, hip-hop, soul, jazz, punk, heavy metal, folk, alt-country, indie or mainstream etc. As long as it has a good beat and maybe some meaningful words to go with it, I’ll probably be into it. Friends were certainly surprised when I told them I listened to Machine Gun Fellatio. They had a bit of a reputation at the time for their stage antics and their strange name just added to the shock. I had been a fan of theirs since I was 15 - unassuming for those who knew me at the time, since I listened to mostly nothing but the Beatles before I discovered them.
One of the band members, Christa Hughes, also has the honour of becoming one of my first female crushes - and she’s still gorgeous to this day. I particularly like how she said she recorded this song naked because she wanted to “feel like a dirty fucking whore”. She does sing this just as good in costume too.

Keane

"Ishin Denshin (You've Got to Help Yourself) (feat. Tigarah)"

Day 13 - A song that is a guilty pleasure

Whoops, missed a day!

Anyway, I feel no guilt for the songs I take pleasure in hearing. I suppose this cover of YMO by Keane and Tigarah is a song most fans don’t “get” because it’s very different to what Keane usually does like but I really enjoy it! I suppose that’s also why I really love the whole Night Train EP.

What’s also really good about this is song is when you uncover the translation of the lyrics, it’s about taking off the mask and seeing yourself as you really are, so with that, you can be a better person.

OMGYAY pt 2

Looks like I’m coming back on the radio after a… uhhh, long absence. And it will only be because I’m covering for someone who usually hosts the show.
I’ll be doing two shows - one on June 14th and again on July 12th on RTR FM 92.1. The show is Bordak Bordak Ngalla, the hour-long Indigenous music program on at 7pm-8pm Thursdays. I feel like I’m a bit out of my depth (nothing a little research can’t cure) and hopefully I remember how to use the studio panel.
But for now, I’m all

Radio is my first love but I admit, I haven’t made many endeavours to return to it after the closure of Groove. Maybe it’s because life and my own lack of confidence have got in the way but with this, it’s a small start and I’m quite excited!

Shit Sissi Says

Me: Hi Sissi! Hi Manny!
Sissi: Meow!
Me: What have you been up to, Sissi?
Sissi: Meow!
Me: Are you hungry Sissi? Is that why you're meowing at me?
Sissi: Meow!
Me: Gosh, you must have been up to a lot today to want to meow at me all the time!
Sissi: Meow!
Me: *walks past Sissi*
Sissi: Meow!
Me: *Scritches behind her ear*
Sissi: Meow!
Me: What do you think, Sissi? This shirt or this shirt?
Sissi: Meow!
Me: Silly Sissi! You are so noisy!
Sissi: Meow!
Me: What's the meaning of life, the universe and everything?
Sissi: Meow!

Day 12 - A song from a band you hate

“Hate” is such a strong word. How about “band that I will never get into because their music is just not for me and would be glad if I never heard them again”? That’s Grinspoon. And Phil Jamieson never endeared me either. It also didn’t help that at their peak, their fans used to hate on Eskimo Joe and their fans because of their silly things he would say about them. He’s all good with them now and has cleaned up his act tremendously, so I suppose I could give him that.
And if you are a Grinspoon fan, I apologise for nothing. We can’t win ‘em all. Just enjoy the video instead.

Eskimo Joe

"Head Hurts"

30 Day Song Challenge

Day 11 - A song from your favourite band

Of course it would have to be Eskimo Joe. :D But it was sooooo damn hard to chose just one song!
So I have chosen one that I like to request whenever I can because it’s almost never played live, even if it was on their first album. One time I requested to Kav to give it a go when he was doing a solo show at the X-Wray. He did play with Joel and a friend of mine recorded it on his iPhone but he’s a lazy bugger who won’t upload it! Damn shame, because “Head Hurts” is a lovely song with a very distinctive opener, which is what got me hooked to this album in the first place.

Would you believe Youtube doesn’t have all of the music videos of Eskimo Joe? It’s kinda sad, actually. “New York” isn’t even on there and it’s my favourite! Somebody needs to do some serious uploading!

Josh Pyke

"Monkey With A Drum"

30 Day Song Challenge

Day 10 - A song that makes you fall asleep

Maybe it’s the drugs setting in but just thinking about this song makes me tired! I remember the first time I went to a Josh Pyke show, I was completely sleep-deprived and this song is like a lullaby to me. I had been awake since 4:30am and rushed from work to uni to this gig, not making any time for a nap. When he started playing “Monkey With a Drum”, I fell asleep standing up right there until my friend shook me awake.

Day 9 - A song that you can dance to

Rock your hips to the Ed Rec hits!
It is a bit trippy but I could dance to this song for Zumba.

Day 8 - A song that you know all the words to

This one was too easy. I’ve heard this song so many times and just love it.

Day 7 - A song that reminds you of a certain event

Not the song itself but the music video. It reminds me of when I was in Paris for one night and I took a Segway tour of the city. I got to ride around the court of the Louvre, plus other parts of the city, which you can see in the clip!

Day 6 - A song that reminds you of somewhere

“Song 4 Mutya” always reminds me of my days working at the community radio station Groove way back in 2007/8. At the time, this song always seem to pop up on the playlist of shows I was working on. And like most popular songs of the time, it got stuck in my head. :P

30 Day Song Challenge

Day 5 - A song that reminds you of someone

This Bob Evans song is all about my friend Jen. She is someone who I’ve known since I was in high school and remained apart of my life until she had to move across the country several months ago. She has become my well-worn postcode full of memories and I love her dearly. She is the constant part of me that is so hard to let go - although in the end, I know it will have to be done. She also has an unashamed crush on Kevin and when she got the album for me, she told me Someone So Much was one of her favourites. Whenever I hear this song, I think of Jen and just hope that while she’s out there in sunny Launceston, she is enjoying her new life.

Nap times for Eskimo Katie. May 2012.

This lovely little lady is the 5-week-old daughter of my best friend, Jeskimo. She is as gorgeous and amazing as her mother. I spent the day with her and just couldn’t get enough, so it was extra hard to leave when she fell asleep while we fussed over her.
